In my opinion I wouldn't set any exclusions on a client Mac.
I think you must have meant to reply here: This is not a discussion of which AV product to use. It depends on your criteria, do you want it to run in the background until action is needed, or would you prefer AV you'd want to almost micromanage. Does your Mac come with built in Anti-Virus similar to Windows Defender. McAfee seems to act autonomously and blocks software I know is safe for now reason. AVG is pretty useless it offers essentially bloatware with what I think are pointless functions. I can recommend AV not to bother with, such Avast as a colleague of mine tested it by downloading a virus shell (like a virtual vaccine) and Avast never picked it up. I recently deployed Symantec Endpoint Manager, and used that to deploy to all client machines, it runs very much in the background, and just does it job. Most AV has some sort of compatibility with Apple products, as Apple account for a large part of the personal devices market and therefore they AV vendors/developers would view that untapped market as more money. Recommending a particular AV brand would be difficult (I know that doesn't help).

The remaining directories should be used at your/an accepted level of risk, but have shown to provide improvement with/for *some* AV products and their impact on Adobe, Office & Quark (where used, and it still is in some rare circumstances) While you might not feel comfortable setting up exclusions, should the need arise, I recommend adding the following exclusions for AV for Mac, and it should be relatively safe to do so.įor example, if anything ever does use these locations we have a bigger problem, and/or the AV should detect any operations in other sections of the filesystem. Not all ant-virus products for Mac will require setting up exclusions, however some AV products impact normal operations far more than they should.
